Life is a Journey, not a Destination

In keeping our eye on the ball, we still need to appreciate and be mindful of the here and now.

An introduction to Jack Picone, his journey, and your journey as a photographer. Understand how street photography and life can be related. With the foundation laid out, you will soon appreciate how the destination is not the most important thing, but it is indeed the moments we have experienced along the way.

Life in Motion

If we just take some time to stop and look, we may instantaneously be able to capture the wonderful life in motion that will elevate our picture from ordinary to extraordinary.

Let's just take some time to stop and look. We can capture life's wonderful motion in a frozen moment that will elevate your picture from ordinary to extraordinary.

As life rushes by, it is most likely; we notice little of it. It is paramount for a photographer to stop and to 'see' life's moments in motion. 'Waiting' is the only 'given' in making photographs more extraordinary and less ordinary. The longer the photographer stays still, the more likely it is that the world unfolds a poetic moment in front of them to document.

The Decisive Moment

The world in front of us is like a little stage. If we wait for it long enough, we will find the sensational moment to capture.

Frozen, yet, so much movement. As you click the shutter, you will be able to reconnect with the world in your decisive moment. The more we photograph, the better instinct we have to capture the decisive moments. There is a confluence of variables that will come together at the right place, and the right time, if you are willing to wait and let it unfold.

Past, Present, and Future

We humans may be able to create many unimaginable wonders, but we cannot do what a camera does. It can freeze a split second in time.

7.png

The world would not have been as interesting as it is without other people in it. With different languages, traditions, and culture, people become endlessly fascinating in their own aesthetic. Being a photographer, we can capture these present moments in time which can prove to be of great value in the future, although it has already become a past. If you are willing to just go out, and discover new experiences, you can be the mirror of the culture.

The Power of Street Photography

JackPicone__Color_Extra-PIx_004.JPG

Time and again, street photographers walk the street, looking for great moments to capture, and finding none. It is these lost moments where we find new discoveries

Finding new discoveries, capturing unfolding moments, and keeping a diary of your visual footage through street photography. In this chapter, we will understand what street photography is and how we can create extraordinary photographs. With hard work, persistence, learning from your mistakes, going back to shoot more, you, too, can become a photographer who takes a consistent number of photographs that are high in aesthetic value.

Human Interaction

JackPicone__Color_Extra-PIx_020.jpg

Even if it’s just a smile, you can bring down walls and open up doors to new possibilities.

There is no denying that photographing humans will result in human interactions. With photographers, there are two kinds of human interactions. The first type is unobtrusive, the people barely notice you’re there. The second type is when they do see you, and it turns into a social dance. Neither is wrong or right. You can learn to use both in documenting your photography journey in Human Interaction.

Storytelling

JACKPICONE-WARMIX-WEB-29.JPG

People often say “a photo is worth a thousand words,” but Jack Picone believes a photo is a thousand misunderstandings.

Everyone has their own individual story, and yet, they are also a part of collective stories. In a war, for instance, some people could become invisible and unheard if there were not photographers there to tell their stories. Jack Picone shares his experiences of war photography and how this is not only a documentation of visual history but also like a form of therapy for people who have not yet been heard or seen. You, too, can learn to create your visual history, and be part of telling someone else's story, and form a collective memory and history.

Black & White vs. Colour

JACKPICONE-WARMIX-WEB-45.JPG

The world is not in black and white. When we take the color away, we get rid of all the distractions, and start seeing the true meaning of a photograph.

The world is not in black and white. When we take the colour away, we get rid of all the distractions and start seeing the true meaning of a photograph.

It is true that colours are beautiful. So much so, we may get distracted by them. Choosing to eliminate the colour element can, at times, elevate our photograph aesthetically. It is a creative choice to author photographs in black and white or color. This is where we learn to see the differences between the two choices and choose one to perfectly describe the photographs we wish to make.

Negative vs. Digital

There are many techniques that can be used. What is most important is finding the right amount of each element to create harmony.

JackPicone__AdditionalPIx-041.jpg
10.png

There are many compositional rules we can use, but Jack Picone often uses juxtaposition. Juxtaposition not only helps to clarify the differences of the elements within a photo, but also exemplifies its meaning. Of course there are many tools and techniques which are useful to draw on occasionally, but after a long time of making photographs, you can do it in a reflective way without losing the core message.

By slowing down, we truly speed up the process of understanding photography.

As paradoxical as it sounds, slow is fast. By taking some time from this fast-forward moving world, we can pay attention to every little detail of a photograph that eventually forms a unity as a whole. Because a film camera is slower, it gives us more time to think about all the variables before we trip the shutter. As you are slowly understanding each and every element that goes into making one photograph, you are able to reconnect with the true essence of the photograph, and of who you are photographing.
